Corsets, Tight-lacing and Other Forms of Body Sculpture (Hardcover)
From corsets to codpieces, stockings to stilettos and piercing to push-up bras, fashion and sex have always enjoyed a very close relationship. This new edition of David Kunzle's rich and revealing history of corsetry and body sculpture shows how this neglected phenomenon is closely bound up with sexual self-expression. Drawing on sources as diverse as medical literature and popular magazine articles, this fascinating history shows how in many ways the use of the corset rejected the role of the passive, maternal woman - so that in Victorian times it was actually seen by many as a scandalous threat to the social order. Even today fashion designers recognize its subversive powers, as a symbol of eroticism, decadence and control. Taking in other curiosities such as ancient body decoration, male corsetry, masochism and foot fetishism, this is an often racy journey into the enigma of all those who sculpt the shape of their desires onto their bodies.

What Lies Beneath
From Corset to Wonderbra
In the first Bridget Jones movie, the scene where our curvaceous heroine dithers between choosing lacy lingerie or humongous hold-it-all-in knickers for a Big Night Out brought a roar of delighted recognition from the sisterhood. Our shameful secret was out, and it was gloriously funny. But it also marked another step forward in the relationship between women and their scanties. Over the past 150 years, underwear has changed from being a set of purely functional garments to become a symbol of female empowerment and sexuality. Helen Murray finds out just what was going on underneath those skirts beginning with the corset which began its decline in the 1910s, right through 'wasp waists', 'no bra', 'power-dressing' and 'underwire' to today's 'have-it-all' world.

Victorian Literature and the Anorexic Body (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-century Literature & Culture)
Victorian Literature and the Anorexic Body (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-century Literature & Culture) (Hardcover)
Anna Krugovoy Silver examines the ways nineteenth-century British writers used physical states of the female body - hunger, appetite, fat and slenderness - in the creation of female characters. Silver argues that anorexia nervosa, first diagnosed in 1873, serves as a paradigm for the cultural ideal of middle-class womanhood in Victorian Britain. In addition, Silver relates these literary expressions to the representation of women's bodies in the conduct books, beauty manuals and other non-fiction prose of the period, contending that women 'performed' their gender and class alliances through the slender body. Silver discusses a wide range of writers including Charlotte Bront Christina Rossetti, Charles Dickens, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Bram Stoker and Lewis Carroll to show that mainstream models of middle-class Victorian womanhood share important qualities with the beliefs or behaviours of the anorexic girl or woman.

Corsets and Crinolines
Corsets and Crinolines (Paperback)
The first of Miss Waugh's important books on historic costume, Corsets and Crinolines , set a new standard of accuracy and interest. Showing that the silhouette of women's dress has been in a state of continuous change, allied to economic and architectural evolution as well as changing ideas of sexual attractiveness, she itemises three cycles in the last 400 years in which women's silhouette was blown up to the utmost limit, by artificial means, and then collapsed again to a long straight line. At these points the extremes were invariably considered absurdities and the corsets and hoops were discarded by their users, so that in actuality very few specimens from the earlier periods at least have come down to us. This book is a study of these shapes and how they were produced, how simple laced bodices became corsets of cane, whale-bone and steel, while padding at shoulders and hips gave way to the structures of farthingales, hoops and bustles. Since paintings, prints and photographs of these props are not sufficient to convey their three-dimensional form, Miss Waugh has provided structural drawings and patterns, always made from existing specimens. Each period is enlivened by quotations from contemporary sources - from letters, diaries, satiric poems, tailors' and dressmakers' bills, as well as journalists' accounts, often very amusing in themselves. These describe the garments and their under-structures, and show how they were viewed by the people who saw them. Added are an index, a glossary of terms and materials, appendices on the repair and manufacture of corsets and crinolines, on whalebone and the whale fishery that supported it.
